The Senior Area has been very fortunate to receive an additional AVAILLL kit from Altrusa Ashburton. We are very excited about the new titles in the kit.
We are finishing the year how we started, with another AVAILLL, and we voted for The NeverEnding Story.
In the programme students use a technique to "ReadWatch" a movie, where they watch a movie with it's accompanying subtitles. This is followed by activities orientated to build key skills of reading comprehension, fluency, vocabulary and spelling.

Compound and Found
In this activity you will ReadWatch a portion of the movie and every time you see a compound word you add it to your list. Make as long a list as possible because there is a team game that goes along with this and the longer your lest, the better for your team.
This is how the game is played. You will be on a secret team. I won't let you know which team you are in until we finish ReadWatch. When you find out, you will contribute the number of compound words you found to your team total by meeting with your team, totalling your possible team score and then submit it.
Before we get started we need to check that we are all clear what a compound word is. Turn to the person next to you and tell them what you think a compound word is and an example of one. We will share these back with the class.

Match the Meaning
In this activity the movie will be paused and you will need to find the word from the subtitle that matches the meaning in the box.
Synonym Search
In this activity the movie will be paused and you will find the word from the subtitle that is a synonym for the word in the box.
What's the Word?
In this activity there are two parts;
- the Word Hunt (where you make as many words as you can from the letters in a word from the subtitles)
- Mystery Word (where you find the word in the subtitles from the jumbled letters)
