Each day we begin with our karakia to focus us in our learning.
And we work each day to put things into the three kete of knowledge.

Homework
As explained at interviews at the beginning of the year, we are going back to basics with homework in 2018. The following is expected of children in Room 2;
Reading - read for at least 20 minutes each night. Ideally this would include a mixture over the week of you reading with your child, taking turns readings pages/paragraphs/chapters, you reading to your child or them reading on their own. Books from the school library can be taken home along with other books that are in the classroom. The Ashburton Public Library is free to join and I would encourage you to make use of this great resource. If you have difficulty finding suitable books I can help. You may wish to set up a reading tick chart for your child to help them monitor their reading and decide together a small incentive to help them remain on track with their reading at home.
Spelling - during the term children will be learning the words they made errors with from the Essential Word Lists in class, usually in groups of 10 words every 2 weeks, by doing a range of spelling and word study activities as part of their Daily 5. Next term I will re-test their errors and then learning will continue as before. You can help at home by also working with your child on these words which will be recorded in their notebook. Please ensure that your child brings this notebook back to school each day as it also contains their logins and passwords for commonly used sites within the classroom. Examples of the activities we are doing at school to help with learning spelling words can be found under the Literacy tab of this website.
Maths - by Year 5 and 6 children need to know their addition and subtraction facts to 20 and be developing speed and accuracy with all of their times tables using both multiplication and division facts. You can help them at home by encouraging the learning of these facts.A good way to do this is using number triangles such as those below (these can be done for addition AND subtraction and multiplication AND division. This allows them to always see the connection between addition and subtraction, multiplication and division. The order for learning multiplication tables is 2x, 5x, 10x, 3x, 4x, 6x, 7x, 8x, 9x.

Our class weebly also has a wide variety of activities that children can be engaging in at home. There are Word of the Week, Maths and problem solving challenges which will change each week that they can engage in, and sites that they use in the classroom such as Studyladder, Prodigy, Epic Books and Kiwi Kids News are all linked on the site either under their curriculum area or on the Learning Links page. Some sites will require your child to login and their logins and passwords are in the back of the same notebook that they will be recording their spelling words in.
There may also be times when some of their work on google Drive can be done at home.
